What Is SASUKE? The Japanese Obstacle Competition Behind Ninja Warrior
If you're a fan of Ninja Warrior-style obstacle courses, there's one name you should know:
SASUKE.
SASUKE is the Japanese obstacle-course television competition produced by TBS that began in 1997. Competitors attempt a series of increasingly difficult obstacle stages that challenge qualities such as strength, speed, balance, endurance and technique. TBS records the first SASUKE competition as airing on September 27, 1997.
Is SASUKE the Same as Ninja Warrior?
SASUKE is essentially where the worldwide Ninja Warrior phenomenon began.
TBS identifies Ninja Warrior as the overseas format name for SASUKE. The format has become enormous internationally: TBS says SASUKE/Ninja Warrior has aired in more than 160 countries and regions, with local versions produced in more than 25 countries.
The basic idea is easy to understand but extremely difficult to master: athletes must successfully navigate challenging obstacles and continue advancing through the course.
What Skills Does SASUKE Challenge?
SASUKE isn't simply about being strong.
Successful obstacle-course athletes may need a combination of:
Grip strength. Upper-body strength. Balance. Speed. Coordination. Endurance. Agility. Body control. Obstacle technique.
That's part of what makes this style of competition so interesting. One obstacle may demand explosive movement while the next tests balance or grip endurance.
The influence of SASUKE now reaches beyond television, too. A SASUKE-inspired obstacle discipline is part of the modern pentathlon program for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
