When Did SASUKE First Air? The Origins of Ninja Warrior

When Did SASUKE First Air?

Long before American Ninja Warrior, there was SASUKE.

The original Japanese obstacle competition SASUKE first aired on TBS in Japan on September 27, 1997.

The first competition was officially titled Ultimate Survival Attack SASUKE and challenged competitors with an increasingly difficult multi-stage obstacle course.

According to TBS's official historical archive, the inaugural 1997 competition produced four finalists, but nobody achieved Total Victory by completing the entire course.

That first competition helped establish a format that would eventually become a worldwide obstacle-course phenomenon.

SASUKE Started as a Television Special

SASUKE did not originally begin as the standalone international franchise people recognize today.

TBS says the competition began in 1997 as a special feature of another television program. The concept centered around competitors attempting demanding athletic obstacles across multiple stages.

As SASUKE grew, the combination of climbing, swinging, grip strength, balance, speed, agility and obstacle technique attracted audiences far beyond Japan.

From SASUKE to Ninja Warrior

SASUKE eventually reached international audiences and became particularly recognizable in the United States through Ninja Warrior.

TBS reports that the original Japanese program became known as Ninja Warrior in the United States, with the U.S. television exposure helping introduce American audiences to the competitors and obstacle-course format.

The concept would ultimately help inspire the larger Ninja Warrior movement and obstacle-training culture that exists today.
